I ran my first 5k this past Sunday! I’m NOT a runner, I don’t like running...never have (my apologies to you runners).😂🏃🏿‍♂️ It’s just never been my thing. Give me a weight room and I’m a happy man! However, I made a vow to myself that I was going to do more things in 2019 to push me out of my comfort zone. Things that scared me & pushed me out of my comfort zone. Now to some of you reading this 3.5 miles is your daily warm up! To me it seemed like 30 miles! I had one goal...FINISH in under 38 minutes!

Few things I learned while running:
1. With each step taken, is another step towards finishing. No matter if I was running or walking I was still making progress. So do a little something everyday...it’s progress.

2. Run your OWN race: while I was barely to mile 2, there were other runners already on their way back to the finish! Obviously more accomplished and experienced runners. I had to refocus on “my” run; not theirs! Never judge your journey to anyone else’s.

3. Everyone running is running for different reasons/purposes. I saw a runner pushing another person in a wheelchair cycle while running. That brought a ton of perspective. As in life, we all have different callings, reasons, goals etc.

4. It was blazing hot here in Nebraska on Sunday! I was very uncomfortable...my legs were burning, calves were on fire and the sweat was killing my eyes! But I had to remind myself that the body must obey the mind, so I kept my mind focused on one step at a time! Life isn’t going to always be easy. In fact some times it straight up hurts and it sucks...but keep on moving! Crawl if you must!

5. This picture was taken as I was about 10 or so yards away from the finish line and seeing all the people cheering me and the other runners on was crazy cool and gave me a burst of energy! In life we all need encouragement and should give as much too others as we can...my legs that were burning just a few yards before were now striding!

I don’t know what YOUR 5k maybe...but I encourage you to do it!

Kick it down....there have been doors in my life (some self imposed) that I simply had to decide to kick down!

Doors of depression, anger, fear, pride,un-forgiveness, jealousy, anxiety, regret, procrastination, indecision...

Some doors you can walk through, others must be kicked down!

Go kick it!!!!!

I shared two weeks ago that our Son Aden “Lil AD” would be doing an internship in Ghana, Africa this summer.

He said his experiences thus far have been life changing. Most notably his recent visit to the slave castles.

He said “Pops I have no words...no words...my ancestors walked this soil and I can’t begin to imagine what they faced as they saw the last images of their homeland”.

The bottom right picture was known as “the door of no return” ....today called the door of return.

Today is Juneteenth (as the slaves called it) June 19th...154 years ago, the slaves in Texas were finally notified that they were “FREE” two years after President Lincoln’s Proclamation of Emancipation.

Inspiring & sobering.

Death has been on my mind a lot this year. NOT in a bad way, but more introspective and reflective.

As in, being relentless about giving thanks to God daily for LIFE! I don’t want to go to my grave with my music still in me.

I no longer allow myself to rest in places of negativity, slumber in past failures or let grief or depression reign over my heart and mind.

I know many of you experienced your first Father’s Day without your Dads. Maybe you simply checked out. Believe me I understand all too well. Mother’s Day is the same for me.

Time does NOT heal all wounds in my opinion. However, over time the wounds of a lost loved one become manageable. When I lost my Mom, I spent a lot of TIME after her death mourning, depressed, angry and mad at God and the world all while wearing a mask that all is well.

Grief is natural...but I went to another level that was very destructive.

I’m grateful for the lessons that I learned. Decisions create our conditions..I experienced some very painful self inflicted conditions, but I’m grateful!

Those things didn’t happen “to” me, they happened “for” me. As you grieve the loss of a loved one or just in a trying time of life.

Remember, this to shall pass and as my late Momma would say “There’s always a message in the mess if you look for it”.

I choose to celebrate Mommas life by living mine to the fullest! Anything less she WOULD NOT tolerate:)

Much love...go and LIVE!!
